Fatalone: A Legacy of Primitivo
Fatalone is a historic, family-run winery in Gioia del Colle, where a passion for Primitivo has been passed down for five generations. Founded in the late 19th century by Nicola Petrera, who built his home on the sun-drenched Spinomarino hill, the estate was carefully cultivated to optimize grape-growing conditions. This dedication to terroir has shaped Fatalone’s philosophy, rooted in sustainability and respect for nature.
In 1987, Fatalone made history as the first winery to bottle Primitivo DOC Gioia del Colle as a single varietal, solidifying its reputation as a pioneer of the region. The winery's name pays homage to Filippo Petrera, affectionately called “Il Fatalone” for his charismatic nature. Today, the Petrera family continues to uphold this legacy, crafting wines with integrity, authenticity, and a deep connection to the land.
The estate’s vineyards are farmed organically, with a commitment to minimal intervention to allow the Primitivo grape to fully express its character. Hand-harvesting ensures that only the finest fruit is selected, while spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts preserves the purity of each vintage. Aging takes place in a combination of stainless steel and Slavonian oak, balancing freshness with complexity.
Situated at an altitude of 365 meters, the vineyards benefit from dramatic temperature shifts between day and night, enhancing the aromatic intensity and structure of the wines. The limestone-rich soils provide excellent drainage, contributing to the bold yet elegant profile that defines Fatalone’s Primitivo.
Guided by tradition but always evolving, Fatalone embraces sustainable energy practices, using solar power and natural temperature control in the cellar. This unwavering dedication to quality, sustainability, and craftsmanship ensures that every bottle captures the essence of Gioia del Colle and the timeless spirit of Primitivo.
